Grigsby Place
The original cabin, in the middle, was built in the
1840s for Ben and Louise "Catty" Grigsby, who was born
a slave. Catty lived here for 114 years, until her death in the
1940s. One year, Catty's son John had a good potato crop after a
hailstorm beat the crop to the ground. So he tried it himself, beating
another crop to the ground with canes, but to disastrous effect.
John commented that, "The wrong man beat 'em down."
Catty's husband claimed to be an invalid, and was
transported everywhere in a wagon. However, when he was pulled into
the woods and someone yelled "bear!" he ran out under
his own power.
